Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Verdi's Macbeth: "full of sound and fury."
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Giuseppe Verdi composed operas based on three of Shakespeare's plays, Macbeth in 1847, Otello in 1887, and Falstaff in 1893 (based on the Merry Wives of Windsor). As an opera, Macbeth is not considered as important as Verdi's later Otello and Falstaff. Macbeth follows Shakespeare's tragedy involving ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing
The sound is lousy; most of the cast, pedestrian, though the MacDuff more than passes muster; the conducting is well nuanced, and Callas is incredible. This strikes me as the finest example of vocal operatic acting available, subtle and multifacited so that we do not have a cut-out villainess, even though overall Callas develops a thoroughly repulsive character. Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Good Cast, but raspy sound
What was I thinking? the original recording is so old that the sound quality is really bad. It's not the manufacturer's fault, I just didn't do enough research. You'd be better off buying a recording with a less known soprano but with better sound quality

EMI has issued two sets of the Maria Callas's Macbeth. The first set says 1993 on the back, the second says 1997. The earlier issue has a black cover, the latter is blue.

With the second issue you get somewhat fancier packaging, a couple of more pictures of Callas, and the libretto is easier to read. It also costs more on the used market.

To my ears there is absolutely no difference in sound between the two.

Around the Internet there is talk that EMI substituted without ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Verdi: Macbeth
While not on the level on the level of the sound quality of a recent digital recording, it is good, and its historic value makes up for the sound quality. I am glad I bought it.
