Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Review:
Advanced ABAP Programming for SAP covers the more difficult aspects of ABAP, the customization and reporting language built into SAP R/3. This book assumes a basic familiarity with the ABAP language (formerly known as ABAP/4) and builds upon it, exposing the reader to ABAP's considerable customization and transaction-handling power along the way.

Here you'll find lots of prose to back up the code. Typically, the authors (three SAP consultants) introduce a subject with an explanation and then present a short program that illustrates the concept in its simplest case. From there, they provide the reader with code and prose that address variations on the standard case.

The authors also emphasize procedures where appropriate. In their coverage of creating a domain in the Data Dictionary, for example, they provide a step-by-step procedure with screen shots from the SAP environment. The result: Advanced ABAP represents a good tutorial for those wanting to expand their ABAP skills beyond the essentials. Back it up with a reference and you'll be ready to tackle complex assignments. --David Wall

Topics covered: Graphical user interface (GUI) elements, Function Modules, Business APIs (BAPIs), data, tables, views, transactions, and transaction processing (includes information on the Screen Painter, the Menu Painter, screen loops, and locking strategies).

Product Description:
With Advanced ABAP/4 Programming for SAP, the thousands of new ABAP/4 programmers will learn the latest techniques for developing custom applications using SAP's R/3 system and the Internet. Real-world examples, source code, and professional advice from the experienced authors enhance and support each topic. Advanced ABAP/4 Programming for SAP also includes step-by-step instructions for developing applications with ABAP/4 Modular programming and everything you need to know for developing Internet applications with SAP's Internet Transaction Server. This direct and easy-to-read book is the follow up to the authors' successful Introduction to ABAP/4 Programming for SAP.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Sucks! Save your Bucks!
Too simplistic. Programming examples are riddled with errors.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - An average DDIC book, but a poor advanced programming course
I bought this book based on the comments I read, but I was so disapointed in this book. It is an average book to learn about DDIC definitions, and a poor book about advanced programming. Most sections are about defining DDIC elements, but there are two chapters about advanced techniques and performance tips. Altough this sounds good, there is no depth in those subjects. Advanced techniques in the book are about locks and updates. The peformance tips take a whole 12 pages and are very superficial. ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - For jump starter only
if you have years of ABAP experience especially on dialog programming. Save you bucks. This book tries to set up the equation: dialogue programming = advanced abap. simply wrong. I regret my bucks. subcribe a sap magzine will be much better than this book. The publish should not puts this book under the title 'advanced' but 'sap dialogue programming' instead. Advanced abap is only possible from hardcord abapers. Obviously, the author is NOT among them.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Useful but FULL of errors
As an ABAP developer, I know there are few advanced books on ABAP and, while this is one of the better ones, it is so full of errors that it has confused me as many times as it has helped me. It is obvious that some of the text and several of the code examples were not checked since many either do not run, give incorrect results or are just plain wrong. I find this inexcusable in an advanced book whose purpose is to teach since I purchased the book to learn good ABAP coding and I trust the authors to ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Useful on the front lines...
I was a bit skeptical about a book promising to explain advanced ABAP. In fact, the concepts are not advanced but sort of intermediate, so very experienced programmers might not find it useful. However, if you are at that level, the book is very helpful. I completed a programming project, writing a transaction, complete with GUIs, etc. (and all that for the first time)in less time than expected and relying primarily on the book as a reference. Clearly written. The authors should help out SAP with some ... Read More
