Kids love them, they are made very well, are very durable and provide an endless amount of various types of fun for kids, teens and adults. The wide array of games available for this handheld system is great and Nintendo fully backs up their products, so no worries there either. I bought both of my daughters a DS Lite and they are by far one their most prized posessions. As a former PSP owner tend to compare and really miss the music / picture / internet browsing abilities even though i heard there would be a new ds coming soon so... as a gaming console it is perfect! lots of games that means complete availability.. perfect for a kid. If you are looking for something with more conectivity go for a psp...
