- If referring to the content of the music, otherwise.......I suppose it was bound to happen really. Those who got The Sounds of Science and The Criterion Video Collection now see this out and apart from the new videos and No Sleep Til Brooklyn and Fight For Your Right and Brass Monkey being on the DVD, there's just no real reason to buy this. Unless you are a rabid collector or, as is the case, a casual Beasties fan. I think this one caters more for the casual fan or newcomers. I don't know though, I still find it hard to recommend this. It just feels like the record company trying to make another buck while the Beasties go on another hibernation period. In another 5 or 6 years time they make another greatest hits set to commemorate nearly 30 years together. And that's kinda sad really. Still it's out there if anybody needs it. Rating: - Good, but...Don't be a cheapskate, buy Sounds of Science instead--you will not regret it. What you get with Sounds of Science but not with this: -Hit songs: "Slow and Low" "Gratitude" "Alive" "The Negotiation Limerick File" "She's On It" "Remote Control" -Countless really high-quality rarities, awesome instrumentals and hilarious joke songs, as well as lesser-known (but just as good) album tracks. -Terrific packaging and liner notes. -A well-rounded view of the Beasties' 20 year career. The point is, you don't have to be a hardcore fan to want more material than this Solid Gold Hits offers. Sounds of Science was the first thing I ever bought by the Beastie Boys, and it was so good I ended up going out to buy most of the original albums. They are talented enough to warrant a double album best-of, so don't settle for this--get S.O.S. Rating: - Great Songs, Crappy PackageI'm a self-proclaimed casual Beastie Boys fan. I used to have all their albums, owned a few shirts, and I've seen them live a couple of times. But it finally dawned on me that I never actually listened to the CDs! So I ditched the albums & bought the Sounds of Science when that came out... but then I never listened to that either! Too much filler material (face it: the stuff from Some Old Bulls**t & Aglio E Olio just sucks). It didn't take long to ditch that anthology, too. So I picked up Solid Gold hits upon its release. The song selection is much tighter & more convenient for the casual fan who just wants all the hits (including the To The 5 Boroughs material). And the cover is pretty awesome (I think I've always been drawn to their style more than their actual music). But the album package itself stinks! It's packaged in one of those cardboard cases with a platic tray to hold the disc. It looks like a CD single! And what's worse is that there is NO booklet to accompany the CD! All there is are song credits found in the area underneath the disc. A hits package with no notes or anything? Lame. Made me kind of wish I held on to Sounds of Science. But if you're just here for the music & music only, Solid Gold Hits is a good way to go. Rating: - Referring to 2-disc limited edition cd/dvd....For casual Beastie Boys fans, this is a worthy purchase especially if you get the 2-disc edition with the 15 hits and 15 videos for each song. For hardcore fans who have everything from them(including the Criterion video anthology), this is still worthy to have since it has videos not found on that collection all in one place: "Brass Monkey"(live), "Ch-check it out", "No Sleep till Brooklyn", "An Open letter to NYC", "Fight for your Right" and "Triple trouble"(great video). Btw, I put the cd in my pc; no copy protection. And the dvd looks and sounds great. Great stuff, highly recommended. Rating: - Worthwhile collection (4.5 Stars)Great starter CD for the new Beastie Boys fan. All the bases are covered here, with at least 2 songs from each album appearing on the CD. Hardcore fans might want to skip on this CD and buy the 2-disc compilation "The Sounds of Science" instead, or better yet, buy the albums. This CD is geared more towards the casual fan; if the singles have always been your favourite B-Boys tracks, or you simply haven't discovered the Beasties yet, this is a great place to start. Highly recommended. Bonus points for a sweet album cover.
