- Hunk of Junk if you are a MAC user.I upgraded to OSX 10.5 and suddenly my brand new scanner- barely a week old was useless, and guess what. Canon knows this, and they make no driver to support the new OSX operating system. Worse than junk- if you advertise compatibility with OSX operating system then make it compatible. Rating: - Good scanner, worked right awayThis was my first scanner purchase. I needed a scanner to digitize my photographs and also some documents through OCR. This scanner is worth the price, and certainly does the above satisfactorily. The accompanying OCR software is reasonable, but don't try to OCR handwritten documents, no matter how clear and legible they are. I haven't used the accompanying software for scanning, I use the scanner from within GIMP, and it works wonderfully. It is not the fastest scanner I have seen (a preview + actual photo scan takes about a minute). The scanner is also a bit noisier than I expected, but its not too bad. Overall well worth the price. Rating: - Canoscan LIDE 25I find the product simple to use and perfect to include in my backpack with my laptop computer. It is compact and light weight. It is powered by my laptop. My only disappointment is that it is slow to scan an image. Rating: - works well for the MacWe just needed a basic scanner for documents and photos. I was worried about how compatible this would be with my G4 PowerBook running OSX, and it's fine. It's about the size of my 15" laptop but much lighter. Getting power from the computer through the USB port is a very nice feature. We both found it easy to set up and use. It does a nice job with photos, and the OCR software is reliable. I suppose it's slow, but it's so convenient that we're not finding the speed anything to worry about. As usual, Amazon's packing is terrible, and when I saw the state of the box (after the Post Office driver flung it on my porch, which was only the final insult), I was afraid the scanner would be damaged, but the manufacturer's packaging was very sturdy and saved the day. Rating: - Excellent value for the $$$This is one of the great buys around. When you think about it, it costs less than a tank of gas for your car. If you need a scanner that will perform basic scanning functions (photos, documents, etc.) for the home, you can't go wrong here. It's very easy to use and performs very well. Morover, it runs right off your computer, and when you aren't using it, you just unplug and store it (it's also very light in weight), thus saving desk space. I read a review or two complaining about the software. I just popped the disc in, it loaded, and I was off and scanning. The software also includes a nice enhancement program that meets all of my needs. Personally, I always have problems when I read reviews that measure a low priced item by Mercedes-Benz standards. Yeah, you don't get all the extras, the bells & whistles, and related amenities. But if you scanning requirements are as simple as mine, who needs the add ones. Why pay for features you really don't need?
