Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Adequate but not Windows 98 compatible
I bought at a retail store. With a salesman I checked the Canon website. The site and this add said Windows 98 compatible. My UMax 1200 scsi died and the Win 98 system it is on will have to updated eventually, but I thought this would fit the bill til then. After many emails back and forth to the company, turns out it is compatible starting w/ Windows 98SE, not Windows 98. The company was very responsive. I've loaded on my laptop w/ Win Me in the meantime. If you have a lot of items to scan, you may want to look elsewhere as this is pretty slow. The quality is adequate, color resolution greater than 300 dpi slows it down. If just an occassional scanner its ok. Does auto-cropping that my old astra couldn't do.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great photo scanner
I needed a photo scanner quickly for a family reunion and this was perfect. It shipped very quickly and was very easy to setup. The immediate results were impressive. It is very light weight and does not require a separate power supply, which I really like since this device will travel with us to other family reunions.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not bad for the price
The Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 is not a bad device for the price. I use it for scanning documents during mortgage signings and it is very clear.
Pros: clear image , it is very light weight. I place it into my case next to my laptop without a problem. It is USB powered. Very cool.
Cons: it is slow.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - LiDE 25 Review
I had rated it as 4 star, because it deserves it. This is the best price to performance ratio. It is very light and the setup is easy. One of the best thing is it is USB powered so no more power cords. If you are looking for a good scanner you should look no further and go for it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I <3 it
My brother and I had a printer for our dorm, but needed a cheap but quality scanner to scan the drawn elements of our game design projects onto the computer for easy editing and digital archiving. There aren't a lot of scanners that come without a printer attached, but this one solved our problems. This scanner works great. It runs entirely on USB power and is so thin that if my bag weren't so much of a mess I could probably carry it around with my laptop, tablet and sketch pad and scan, upload and edit sketches on the go. Excessive? Totally! Awesome enough to try? I'm just waiting for an opertunity!

You'll be into this scanner if:
1. You already have a printer and don't want to buy another one just to have a scanner
2. You have a program like Photoshop (photo editor or advanced drawing program) or PDF (for word processed printouts or handwritten notes to be distrubuted) that you're going to be sending your scans to on a regular basis (You can set it up to do that automatically when a button is pushed)
3. Your workspace is already so cluttered with wires you stand up to leave and joysticks and monitors try to follow, or your power strip is quickly becoming a fire hazard (much to the dismay of college health and safety)
4. You're insane enough to think carrying a scanner around in your luggage is cool ;) or you have some other reason, whether more or less eccentric, that makes having a scanner that's particularly thin useful. Durability in travel situations has not been tested.

Side Notes:
For whatever reason the manufacturers thought it was a good idea to auto-enable auto-re-sizing. This is great if you're scanning pictures, not great if you're scanning light pencil strokes. This is because if your entire item is drawn in light pencil, the auto resize will not consider it important, and your entire scan will come out as a dark fleck of dirt in the corner. Don't fret- there's a way to turn this off. If you're using the CanoScan Toolbox, Scan Mode is set to COLOR(MULTI-SCAN). If you change this to COLOR then the Multi-Scan functionality (which is actually designed to recognize parts of the scanned image that are unique pictures and scan them each into a separate file) will cease and you'll get normal full page scans again. There's other software with the scanner as well, but frankly I like the toolbox best for my purposes.
