But largely due to frenzied word of mouth, the tunes quickly outgrew their initial parameters, becoming massively popular in nightclubs and with private listeners. Compiled by DJ Ravin, who has been involved with the project since the first pair of groundbreaking albums, the present two-disc set celebrates the opening of a new Buddha-Bar in London. But aside from reflecting the multi-cultural population of this, or, for that matter, virtually any other large modern city, the set list has relatively little to do with any precise physical location. Titled Royal Victoria and Baron's Court, the twin programs are typically chilled-out and multi-layered, sometimes anchored by frigidly precise snare beats. Some tunes have a louche, urban feel, giving an almost cartoon-like nod to forties film noir or a bal-musette of the imagination. Others offer forlorn-sounding Albinoni-like strings, disembodied synths and chorales that seem to descend from, yet linger, on high. Still other tracks journey to Africa, Asia, the Middle and Far East, with handmade flutes, fiddles, and percussion, plus intersecting, overdubbed solo voices imported from various locales. After so many years and innumerable imitators, Buddha-Bar obviously is no longer quite the latest thing, but still wields the indisputable clout of an original. Longtime fans will certainly find a lot to like here. --Christina Roden Album Description: DJ RAVIN returns to head up Buddha Bar 9. ![]() Rating: - The First PictureThis album was my introduction into the Buddha-Bar series and I must say that I'm pretty pleased with it. We heard it at a Morrocan restaurant in France and I fell in love right there. I *had* to have it. Luckily, the local Fnac had it and several of its sibling Buddha-Bars available. We settled for just this one. I'll be frank: I don't like the second CD. Maybe it just hasn't grown on me yet, but I feel like the best of this album is all on the first disc. My review, then, is half-complete ... Read More Rating: - Really Boring Buddha BarWow. Really disappointed in this one. It ALL sounds alike, boring beats, and both CDs focus on a house/dance beat. We count on Buddha Bar NOT to produce the same old house tunes found in all those other compilations. Unlike one of the other reviewers, I didn't really find any tracks that stood out. If you like thumpy background music at your parties, this is a great one for you. Nobody will mind talking over these tracks. Rating: - Some good tracks but not enoughThe buddha bar series has declined ever since vol. 8 It was nice while it lasted! Rating: - FantasticHaving listened to all the previous volumes of Buddha Bar, this one is definitely one of the best. Using both domestic and international flavors, combined with hints of familiarity, DJ Ravin Strings together a rich mix of chilled beats on CD1 (Royal Victoria) followed by a more uptempo CD2 (Baron's Court) that is perfectly suitable for having a drink or two at a sophisticated party. Warning: This album requires mature listeners to appreciate the full range of music contained here (mentally mature, not necessarily ... It really wasn't bad. All Buddha Bar volumes are different and special in their own way. (To be honest, I had to strain to like volume 5.) But this one has a more European flavor than the Far East flavor of some of the others. I liked it immediately. I should add that I like it in the context that I bought it for. That is playing it on my nice patio ... Read More |
