Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good stage production.. but..
The casting of the protagonists didn't do justice to the opera. Turandot was overweight and so was Calaf, son of Timur.. Puccini intended to have a beutiful Turandot and a good looking Calaf. After Liu commits suicide, the conductor drops the baton and doesn't play one of th most beutiful arias. Pin, Pan and Pong were not convincing. The version with Placido Domingo was much better.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - One to avoid
Oh my. I can't really think of THE Turandot video to recommend, but I know that this isn't it. The "modern" ending of Turandot killing herself is just an example of Espert projecting a view onto an opera without taking into consideration whether or not it fits with the characters, the story, or even the music. It does neither. Which is a shame, because Turandot's transformation in Act 3 is really quite stunningly acted. But then there's the singing. Barbara Frittoli as Liu is the best soloist here, ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Worthy Turandot
I really do not understand why some listeners cannot listen to an opera without comparing it to other versions. Every opera singer has something to offer to a performance whether you like it or hate it. There will never be another golden age of singers like 60's. Music is supposed to be beautiful. The poor reviews for this "Turandot" are really unfair. This is a visually spectacular and vocally enjoyable performance. I take issue with the reviewer that said Luana DeVol was too fat and too ugly to be ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A very nice production of Turandot
I particularly enjoyed this production of Turandot. If you are looking for something modern-looking, you might be disappointed, however, this production has a very original twist with the plot ending differently, that is with Turandot's suicide.
Female singers are very good. Luana deVol's Turandot is touching, her singing is credible and gives the picture of a tormented princess, sometimes violent, sometimes fragile rather than the one-dimensional harridan sometimes depicted by others.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Worthy, Opulant Turandot
This production of Puccini's TURANDOT, recorded in its revival in 2005 for the Gran Teatre del Liceu, opened the rebuilt Liceu after the disastrous fire of 1994, and is notable for the stage direction of Nuria Espert, Spain's famous actress and performer, and also for the house and role debut of Luana DeVol in the title role.

For those who appreciate seeing an opera performed in the time and place envisioned by the composer, there is no lack of visual opulence in the set design by Ezio Frigerio ... Read More
