Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Jose Ferrer was both star and director of the British WW2 drama Cockleshell Heroes. Ferrer is cast as Major Stringer, the officer in charge of a delicate naval operation. Stringer and seven volunteers are expected to paddle four canoes into Nazi-held waters, plant limpet mines on enemy boats, and return safely to their own lines. Of the eight courageous saboteurs, only two survive. The story is abundant with suspense, humor and irony, buoyed by a top-rank supporting cast, including Trevor Howard, Victor Maddern and Anthony Newley (Christopher Lee shows up briefly as a German sub commander). Howard delivers the best performance as a subtly resentful officer who was passed up for promotion in order to work with Major Stringer.

There, they would attach limpet mines to German shipping, blow up or damage as many ships as possible, then escape overland and eventually return to Britain.

Any volunteers? (And read no further if you don't like ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Can't wait to get it
Saw this film years ago and really enjoyed the Royal Marine heritage portrayed. Great historical story with strong acting by Ferrer and Howard. Don't look for lots of action scenes, even the climax is mild.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - "Keep the line straight, boys!"
These were the last words spoken by an officer to his men before their execution by a German firing-squad...

Trevor Howard was a devoted officer and a gentleman, never afraid to give his life for his country... Howard was a great character actor with a big presence on the screen in many good films as "Mutiny On the Bounty," "Ryan Daughter," and "Gandhi."

The motion picture deals with the silly mission of ten British Royal Marines, who after embarking a submarine from the English ... Read More
