Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My favorite Meistersinger video
I have quite a number of videos/CDs of this opera, which I never tire of hearing. I do like this cast and this production, however spare and updated. If I could only change one thing, I'd put Nicolai Gedda in as Walther. Yes, yes, I know, but Gedda is rather perfect in anything he does - voice, interpretation, language - and I realize he had retired by the time this was taped. So my preference makes no sense at all. So excuse me, please.

I read the best review, in my opinion, and found ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - SOLID PERFORMANCES, POOR PRODUCTION
I am a Wagner traditionalist, so I prefer my Wagner operas in their proper context; with correct sets, costumes, etc. I suppose it is to Wagner's credit that his operas can be as altered as they are, but it is not my preference - especially for a DVD.

This production is set in the eighteenth or ninetheenth century, it seems, based on the clothes and stage props. I think this significantly detracts from the original medieval Nurnberg setting and its relevant aspects of that caste society, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hail,Sachs!Hail,Brendel!
This not perfect, yet so overpowering "Meistersinger" DVD is unimpeachable about one essential matter;that's inconceivable an old, exhausted Sachs voice singing a more than fifty minutes vocal part on this opera and yet,to stir some credible sexual curiosity from Eva about this guy. So,how can I hope a better Sachs performance than Brendel's,just here?He was stupendous. What a touching, vehement, diligent Sachs;his voice is shining, uniform and vigorous from very beginning to the end of opera.I watched this several ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Wagner's Happiest Opera
As Richard Wagner was commenting on the rigidity and closedmindedness of the music critics of his day, the role of the character Beckmesser is pivotal. Fortunately, this production's Beckmesser is alternately pedantic, sycophantic, officious and tedious--in a word: he's perfect!

The opera makes the point that minds must be kept open to new ideas, while still retaining an understanding of what makes "classical" classic.

The acting and singing are excellent in this 1995 production. ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Meistersinger - as good as can be.
After watching that modern day singing contest -The American Idol- I am happy that this wonderful custom of singing for a prize is still part of the young people's world today. I suppose Wagner was ahead of his time using this idea in two of his operas (Tannhauser and Die Meistersinger) as a great musical and dramatic device.
Tristan und Isolde and Die Meistersinger stand as probably the two greatest operas of the 19th century but they couldn't be more different from each other. It is one of the greatest ... Read More
