As a stage work, By the Hand of the Father has been performed all over North America to great acclaim, and from the evidence here, a lot of that has to be due to the music, some of which Escovedo fans will recognize from previous albums ("Wave," "Ballad of the Sun and the Moon," "With These Hands"). In addition to some new material, there are also a couple of more traditional Mexican songs ("Mexico Americano," "Cancion Mixteca"), and guest vocalists include Ruben Ramos, Cesar Rosas (Los Lobos), and Rosie Flores. The spoken bits link the songs, and the whole thing should definitely whet your appetite to see the full show. This is not background music. --Ed Ward Average Rating:

It's easy to read../the music is sensational/ It's well written../Top notch musicians/ and there is a story line that resonates with real life/..../you feel like you know the people in the song/....This album is a fine tribute to our brothers and sisters who grew up in the border lands. If you feel like they /Mexican Americans/ are just different than yourself, give this album a listen. ... Read More Rating: - Brilliant WorkAmazing CD!!! A must have for all About Productions fans. I also highly recommend to those interested or searching for the early experiences of Mexican Americans/Chicanos in the United States. This is not a traditional historical material in the way anthropologist gather information but in my opinion a more important and rare source being a historical piece by way of how families/insiders have access to intimate knowledge. Rating: - WOW!I won tickets to this theater performance in Arcata, CA from a local radio station KHUM, and it just happened that my sister was coming up to visit that day. We had no idea what kind of a show we'd be seeing. Wow! I had tears in my eyes by the end. Beautiful, passionate, exciting, and profound. I'm buying CDs for both my sister and me.I don't ever want to forget this music. Rating: - What's up, Papa? This is a beautiful collection reflecting the journey of various fathers who have passed through the experiences of the immigrant in this century. Highlighting a wide array of musical styles, the music reflects the sentiments of the stories being told. From the perspective of budding romance amidst war to the remonstrations from children to their father in later life, the disc shows the power of story to affect us. The telling of these family secrets allows a glimpse into the joys, difficulties and regrets ... Read More |
