Witness this 73-minute document from her '79 tour, which finds her backed by her greatest band ever, including guitarist Pat Metheny and the extraordinary bassist Jaco Pastorius, as well as Metheny cohort Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums). Mitchell's The Hissing of Summer Lawns-Hejira-Mingus period is heavily favored; there are two tunes from Court and Spark, but nothing earlier. It's not perfect--the film clips edited into the live tracks (at Mitchell's direction) are an annoying distraction (Rebel Without a Cause? Huh?). But by the time Mitchell, Mays, and vocal group the Persuasions finish a spine-tingling version of the title song, you'll have witnessed something special--and historic, as this was the only time this stellar crew toured together. --Sam Graham Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Joni and Jaco at their bestJaco Pastorius was arguably at this best during this era of playing with Joni Mitchell. Joni, in turn, was performing some of her strongest material ever. The band she put together for Shadows And Light were truly jazz masters, and this pushed the music into ever exploratory realms. The material is beautifully presented and the musicianship is exceptional. On a personal note, when I saw this performance on TV when it first aired, it was my first time to see Jaco Pastorius play. He redefined ... Read More Rating: - Great stuffA friend had this dvd and I had to get a copy myself. I've been a big fan of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays since the 1st group album and seeing them with Joni, Jaco (one of the greatest bass players ever) Brecker on sax, this is just an over all fantastic live show, that I wish I could have seen in person. It would have been nice to see better camera angles on the musicians, but then again, this is supposed to be focused on Joni. Rating: - Great Concert, Frustrating Editing.Being a musician, (and with a band that has some of the greatest musicians in the world), the need to be "eclectic" and add video bites (while they may match the particular song ('s)) was a bit frustrating for me. So, Like my fellow reviewers, I would rather see just the band. After all, these are musicians who would never play again, (due to Jaco's untimely passing). However;, the sound and picture is great, as are all the tracks. Joni has a unique style that compliments ... I was so disappointed in Mingus, I GAVE it away. Further, I resolved never to buy another Joni ablum without a beginning-to-end listen. While fooling around on You Tube a couple months ago, I found a few Joni videos doing some classics and determined that some were from Shadows and Light. When originally released (ca 1980?), I had passsed-over this ... Read More Rating: - At lastIts wonderful to be able to watch what is one of Joni's best concerts. She is as wonderful as always. |
