Given the dark orchestral flavor Armstrong has provided for artists like Massive Attack, U2, and Madonna, it's no surprise to find a sterling guest list (including Bono, David McAlmont, and Evan Dando) to help Armstrong articulate his world-weary musings. Photek adds vibrating beats to the rumbling "Hymn 2," the only dance-oriented track on the album. Moving back in time, Armstrong revamps King Crimson's classic ode to melancholy, "Starless," on "Starless II," adding elegant accompaniment of woozy strings and subtle piano. Dando's remorseful performance on "Wake Up in New York" is a ringer for pain merchant Mark Eitzel; Bono's lackluster performance is less revealing. But by then Armstrong has already worked his solemn, majestic procession to full effect. --Ken Micallef Album Description: Long awaited studio album from 2002 Golden Globe winner (best score for Moulin Rouge). Features collaborations with Bono, Evan dando, Photek, Mogwai, David McAlmont and more. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - ProfoundThe album is somewhat of a survey in styles/sounds, but it is mixed perfectly. I love it, perfect somber beautiful emotional music that blends electronica with interesting heartfelt lyrics performed by excellent singers and poets. This album is worth a listen for anyone wanting to branch out a bit from top 40 music into something more complex and introspective. Rating: - Some was Great, others are OK...This is the first i had from Craig Armstrong. As if to Nothing was an OK album.. but i must say that these track ; - Wake Up In New York - Waltz - Let It Be Love - Finding - CHoral Ending ... was Awesome! I like these 5 songs the most. "Wake Up In New York" and "Let It Be Love" have the pretty much the type since it's a men's voice singing. But i love the guitar solo for Wake up in NY, and i think that the piano work for Let it be Love is ... Rating: - Obnoxious and Overly DenseLike the Reviewer before me, I too found this album to be inconsistent and annoying. The tracks had too many layers of things going on that didn't match. My wife made me turn it off during "Miracle" because the chanty vocal was totally out of tune with the rest of the track, and the incessant blipping in the first track was very uninspiring. "Wake Up in New York" was a fine piece of work, as well as "Let it Be Love". But Craig shoulda saved the experimental tracks for the end. Craig also isn't good ... WAKE UP NEW YORK, SEA SONG, and LET IT BE LOVE are simply among the finest ballads out there, and all are totally different, with 3 different singers. In fact, I've played LET IT BE LOVE probably 100 times in the last 2 months, matching similar overplayed tunes by such greats as the Beatles and Sinatra! So Mr. Armstrong and his friends are in some good company. Plus there's 2 nice choral ... Read More |
