I believe later on, he became very affected by the world around him and seemed unhappy and even frustrated during performances. I went to see him in the 70's at the Summit in Houston and they locked the doors and told us that nobody was allowed out during the performance (even to go to the bathroom!) because it was too disturbing to him.
