Still on the Journey offers a banquet of songs that center on love and living, struggle and death. After 20 years and many lineup shifts, the all-women African American a cappella group continues to demonstrate what a beautiful instrument the human voice can be. A mildly self-indulgent rap self-tribute is offset by the mournful "Spiritual." "Come By Here" illustrates the group's unique capacity to layer vocal lines into a loose net of improvised rhythms and melodies without losing the thread of the song. Here also Sweet Honey dabbles for the first time in vocal percussion. Reflections on Africa come into crisp focus in "Wodabe Nights," while "Wanting Memories" makes it clear that, though the journey has been long and hard, Sweet Honey has no plans to rest. --Sally Weinbach Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Rockin with Sweet Honey! This is a great cd. There are one or two pieces that I wasn't that thrilled with, but overall I give this a strong recommendation. This group is amazing, talented, and create music like I've never heard. It will get into you and you won't be able to let it go! Rating: - Sweet honey in the stereoSweet Honey in the Rock is a group you should see live at least once in your lifetime. Isn't great that we have albums, cassettes, and CDs in the last century? Now the beautiful, powerful music of this group will be around for as long as humans and their CD players are around. Rating: - No Sweeter SoundI first discovered Sweet Honey in the Rock when I was in High Shool, and heard their "Beattitudes" during a special on Martin Luther King Jr. I knew then that I wanted to hear more. This is one of my favorite CD's , and belongs in the collection of anyone that cares about music that matters both lyrically and spiritiually. I've never had a chance to hear them perform live, but the moment I get the opportunity I will be there! Rating: - My current favorite sing-along, lift-me-up, make-me-think CDSWITR sing complex, rhythmic songs of passion, change and hope. And, in my opinion, this is their best. Every song is a winner. This is the one I grab when I'm not sure what I want to hear, and then I find myself just hitting the repeat key on the player. With the current research showing that complex music played for toddlers increases ultimate brain function, this will be a first birthday present for my grandson. |
