False Cognates are words which are similar in both languages but have a different meaning: rent (alquiler)/renta (income). Those seemingly friendly words offer an easy but deceiving translation and present the most frequent pitfalls to the bilingual-speaking person. Includes nearly 3,000 English and Spanish false cognates with over 15,000 definitions. The most comprehensive work of this type to date. The dictionary is completely bilingual with separate English and Spanish sections, as well as numerous examples to illustrate usage in context. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Very useful referenceExcellent reference for all linguists/students. Sort of difficult to study with however...Should be divided into categories if you intend to use it as a study manual. Rating: - Excellent reference workI am very glad to have this book. It is very thorough and scholarly - much more so than NTC's dictionary of false cognates. It avoids silly "false cognates" such as soap-sopa and poster-postre that no one with any formal study of the language would fall into. Rather, it clarifies some of the ones that trip up even good Spanish speakers. The examples of usage the book gives are excellent. I highly recommend it. |
