When Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch arrive in Appaloosa, they find a small, dusty town suffering at the hands of renegade rancher Randall Bragg, a man who has so little regard for the law that he has taken supplies, horses, and women for his own and left the city marshal and one of his deputies for dead. Cole and Hitch, itinerant lawmen, are used to cleaning up after opportunistic thieves, but in Bragg they find an unusually wily adversary - one who raises the stakes by playing not with the rules, but with emotions. Robert B. Parker, the author of more than forty novels, has long been acknowledged as the dean of American crime fiction and has been named Grand Master of the 2002 Edgar awards by the Mystery Writers of America, an honor shared with earlier masters such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen. Parker's fictional Spenser inspired the ABC-TV series "Spenser: For Hire." More recently, the Spenser novels Small Vices and Thin Air have been made into television films for the A&E network. Robert B. Parker lives in Boston. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Fine WesternI am not a great Western fan, however, reading about the new movie with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, based on Robert B. Parker's novel, I had to check out the book; and I was not disappointed. The characters were developed and drew me straight into the story. The storyline, while predictable, was always engaging. Best of all were the dialogs between Hitch and Virgil, sparse yet utterly entertaining. The subtraction of one star is for the somewhat disappointing and strange ending. Although ... Yet it's not all black and white. The good guys have flaws as well, it makes them human. Parker puts good and bad on a western canvas colored with frailty. Rating: - Eye CandyThis easy reading book made a recent trans-ocean flight fly by (no pun intended). Falls into my "Eye Candy" category. Easy to read, occupies a few hours and no expectations for great lit, but decent writing. Great book for vacation reading. Rating: - AppaloosaThis book is enjoyable for the Western book fan. Robert B. Parker captures the period as if he time-traveled from there. Men were men, a no nonsense approach to life. This is the perfect western, second only to Gunman's Rhapsody, another book of his. Rating: - Great Western, Excellent MovieI just came back from seeing the movie Appaloosa & I'm happy to report that it's as good as the book which says a lot. Robert Parker's Spencer series is first rate in the detective-thriller genre with a good dose of humor and philosophy added. Appaloosa and the sequel Resolution are welcome additions with an authenic western setting and style. Bravo, Mr. Parker. |
