Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Hard Times - Hard Reading
I know it is a classic, but so is castor oil. I really appreciate it for the times in which it was written - and I can see parallels between the way children were treated then and how they are still treated in some sects today- but I cannot say I found it an enjoyable read. I prefer Dickens Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and Christmas Carol a lot more. Hard Times is not his best effort.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - what a story
I love this book. An enthralling story line above a social commentary and, as always with Dickens, a reflection on human character.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Dickens
Charles is a great author. Tough to read and understand but if you take the time and slowly read it you will understand and get something out of it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Notes overdone in part
Some of the notes were helpful but a lot of them were stuff that you should know if you are a high school graduate. The book was pretty good altho the style was hard to get used to. The setting of the industrial city of Coketown is vividly described as a miserable, polluted town. There are some strong themes of class struggles between the working men in the factories and the harsh upper classes who seek to exploit them. Nearly all of the upper class characters are depicted in a negative light while the real heroes of the story are from the working ... Read More
