Editorial Review:

Product Description:
In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - LOVE THE BOOK, HATE THE CONDITION
This was a wonderful, enchanting story, loved it. The condition was not acceptable however, and I would not purchase from this seller in the future. This was a CD book and the box was not protected at all. The box was crushed and bent even though new.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It Just Didn't Cast a Spell on Me
This story didn't stir my emotions nor did it work its magic on me. I wish it had because I was looking forward to reading this novel because of the rave reviews and national best seller status. It didn't delve inside the hearts of the characters; their emotions were told rather than felt. The magical apple tree played a major role in the story, but it too, was underdeveloped. It also didn't have a true southern feel and I was also surprised at the excellent reviews this book received - it wasn't ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful and Fun Read!
As an Alice Hoffman fan, I really enjoyed this book which had the same whimsical style as Ms. Hoffman's works. It was a quick read and I highly recommend it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simple and wonderful
I've been waiting for this book for a while. I love the magic and the baking rolled into one. A bit predictable, but quite lovely. If you liked this book, you'd like "Dance Upon the Air".

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Quirky, heartwarming story
The Waverley family has always been a bit peculiar. Between the magic apple tree and the gifts each member of the family has, none of them can claim normality. Claire Waverley has never wanted to and after a tumultuous childhood, has been content to take her grandmother's place as the now much smaller family's head. Her sister, Sydney, is different, and has spent her early adulthood traveling the country, engaging in relationships with dangerous men. When Sydney fears her daughter Bay is in danger, ...
