All eyes are on those closest to the dearly departed: her mischievous sister, Diana, now the family's only hope for redemption; New York's most notorious cad, Henry Schoon-maker, the flame Elizabeth never extinguished; the seductive Penelope Hayes, poised to claim all that her best friend left behind—including Henry; even Elizabeth's scheming former maid, Lina Broud, who discovers that while money matters and breeding counts, gossip is the new currency. As old friends become rivals, Manhattan's most dazzling socialites find their futures threatened by whispers from the past. In this delicious sequel to The Luxe, nothing is more dangerous than a scandal . . . or more precious than a secret. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - (3.5 stars) Had I been younger I would have liked this more....Had I realized at the time that was a young adult book I never would have selected it for a vine pick. But I did, so I read it. Or tried too. In the end I have to say that there is very little in this book that appeals to a mature reader, though I do encourage the growing adolescent historical fiction market and hope that young readers do read this and others to gain an appreciation for history and a solid ground work for more complex tails in later life. If I was an adolescent however, ... Read More Rating: - Marketed towards Teens.A historical romance based in New York in 1899 marketed towards Teens. I enjoy historical novels but this one seem to be more like TV show Gossip Girl. But before I get to the plot, and the "plotting," I must pause to admire another type of beauty: the book itself. Rumors: A Luxe Novel (The Luxe) is an exquisite book ... probably the most elegant I've ever seen. The dust jacket is undoubtedly the most beautiful, and the hardcover binding ... Read More Rating: - Fabulous and suspicious novelI loved this book. It was intriguing and satisfying. I can't wait for the third one to come out! Rating: - Rumors of a good novelThe first book in this series didn't really grab me--in fact, I could barley get through it. But I heard this book was much better, so I thought I'd give it a try though now I realize I shouldn't have bothered. The writing is mediocre at best and the plot is trite. I once heard these books called the Gossip Girls of the 19th Century, and it's true. I didn't care for the GG books, and I don't plan on reading any more of the Luxe novels either. |
